Mevagissey now under new management

On Friday 17th December, our Mevagissey shop was sold to new owners..

With our other two shops in Launceston and Bodmin, we were no longer able to commit the resources necessary to provide our Mevagissey shop with the day to day management it required, and reluctantly made the decision to pass it on.

We have really enjoyed our time in Mevagissey, meeting locals and visitors alike. We look forward to future visits to the village, only as day visitors rather than for work!

The new owners intend to retain the shop as it is, but have some exciting plans for improvements and an increase in the product range. The shop will conitnue to carry the Gillard's name into the foreseeable future.

We would like to thank everyone who shopped with us in Mevagissey for their support, and hope you will continue to support the new owners.

We would also like to thank Marion for managing the shop for us and without whom we would have had to sell up many months ago. Also thanks to Ben and Sarah who looked after the shop for us at weekends.

Gillard's Launceston and Bodmin will continue to trade as normal and are unaffected by the sale of Mevagissey.

Director, Gillard's Cornwall Ltd

Christmas Shop

This week will see our Christmas stock arriving in our shops, starting with Launceston.

We have some great items this year and are really excited about our range which includes many things we have never had before.

How about a giant Gourmet Jelly Bean machine with a cast metal base, glass globe and 600g of gourmet jelly beans. £22.99. We also stock a range of the Gourmet beans in various flavours so you can refill your machine when it is empty.

Or how about a chocolate pizza. Or maybe a chocolate pasty?

We also have caramelised peanuts, chocolate gift sets (tools, cars, aeroplanes, horses, make up sets and many  others), all made from quality German chocolate.

In addition we have our normal popular range of quality confectionery, including Candy Canes, Sugar Mice and chocolate gold coins (British Victorian coins, not Euros).

Some of these items will be uploaded to our website over the next few days, but many of the limited stock items will only be available from our shops in Launceston and Bodmin, so call in and see what we have to offer.

Our Launceston shop is open Monday-Saturday 9am-5pm

Bodmin is open Monday-Saturday, 10am-5pm

Geocaching comes to Mevagissey

Geocaching, the high tech treasure hunting game is being played in Mevagissey.

There are currently three hidden 'caches' in the village, plus a bonus cache on the outskirts (but you have to find the other three before you can find the bonus).

The game has been played in the village since February 2010, and has attracted over 100 caching teams to visit the village and walk around following their GPS (Global Positioning System) devices.

The Mevagissey caches have been placed by Paul & Jeremy Loft, owners of Gillard's Sweet Shop in River Street, and are maintained by them.
Permission for the cache placements was obtained from the Harbour Master, Hugh Bowles.

If all of the above makes no sense to you whatsoever, head over to the Geocaching website to find out more. It's free to join and there is a world of great places to explore for the whole family and literally thousands of hidden caches to be found on your travels. From film pots hidden at the roadside, to huge metal cans hidden on the furthest reaches of the moors, there is a hunt for everyone.

The Mevagissey caches, all with a 'Lovejoy' theme, can be found here

Have fun !

Gluten Free & Vegetarian Options

We offer a range of Gluten Free & vegetarian sweets, and are currently updating our website to show which sweets are gluten free and/or suitable for vegetarians.

Look for the following logos against each item:

GLUTEN FREE

VEGETARIAN

Not all sweets are labelled yet, but over the next few weeks we will be adding the symbols where appropriate.
The absense of a logo against an item does not mean the sweets are not gluten free or suitable for vegetarians, we may just not have got around to labelling them yet.

If you would like to know if a particular sweet is suitable for you, please just ask.

Sasha elected to Cornwall Council

Sasha Gillard-Loft, who runs our Sweet shop in Launceston, was elected as a Liberal Democrat councillor on the new Cornwall Council.

Sasha was delighted with the support she received from local people, including all those who helped in the running of her campaign as well as everyone who voted for her.

As a result of her election, Sasha will be cutting the number of hours she works in the shop, in order that she can do justice to her new role by spending the appropriate amount of time working for her constituents.

Sasha said:
"I won't be leaving the shop completely, as it is an ideal place to meet many of the people I now represent. However I will need to work hard to justify the faith people showed in my me by voting for me, so inevitably will have to cut the amount of time I am in the shop.
No doubt there will be many meetings and other calls upon my time"

Jeremy Loft, owner of Gillard's added:
"I am very proud of what my sister has achieved, but that's Sasha, when she puts her mind to something she puts her heart and soul into it and makes it work. This is evidenced by her planning of the last two late night Christmas shopping events in the town.
We'll miss her at the shop, but understand that she will have huge demands on her time as a result of her new role as councillor. The rest of the family will pull together to help run our two shops (the other is in Mevagissey) so that Sasha can have as much time off as she needs for her council work"

Paul Loft (Chairman of Launceston Chamber of Commerce, and joint owner of Gillard's) said:
"We are all proud of Sasha and will support her all the way. With our Dad Chris being the Chairman of the Royal British Legion, my Chairmanship of the Chamber of Commerce and now Sasha being elected onto the council, it seems we are all doing our bit for the town. Jeremy's not let off either, as he organises the town's Christmas Lights each year.
We all love the town of Launceston and will do our best in our various roles to keep it the great town that it is to live, work and visit"

Individual Chocolates

From Tuesday 10th March, we will be stocking a range of individual chocolates which can be selected to make up your own special box - perhaps for Mother's Day or Easter, or just as a gift for that special someone.

Included in the price will be the chocolates, a decorative box and ribbon.

Box sizes will be 2, 6, 12 and 24 chocolates, and will be a fixed price per box no matter which chocolates you choose to make up your selection.

Note: These individual chocolates will initially be available in our Launceston shop only, and not available by mail order.

New Postage Charges

NEW POSTAGE ARRANGEMENTS ON OUR WEB SITE

As from today, our website now automatically adds the postage charge when you go to the checkout. You no longer need to select a 'postage item'.

We have also slightly reduced our flat rate of postage to £3.95 per order.

This system is not ideal if you wish to purchase just one small item, however if we add an individual postage rate to each item on our website, then orders for multiple items would soon escallate to an unacceptable level as each item is added.

Most of our customers order several items at a time.

We have therefore decided to set a fixed postage rate, and will guarantee to ship your order for that price regardless of size and weight.
